PRESS RELEASE:

Chevrolet announces the 2010 Camaro TRANSFORMERS Special Edition

DETROIT - Fans of the new Camaro and the blockbuster TRANSFORMERS movies can now combine their love of the car and the films with the Chevrolet Camaro TRANSFORMERS Special Edition announced today at Comic-Con in San Diego.

"When the first TRANSFORMERS movie was setting box office records, we had countless customers asking to purchase the 'BUMBLEBEE' Camaro," said Karen Rafferty, product marketing director, Chevrolet. "Now, they can buy one with the new Camaro TRANSFORMERS Special Edition. Streets all over North America will be buzzing in no time."

Features such as an EPA-rated 29 highway mpg on the V6-powered Camaro, Bluetooth phone connectivity, USB connectivity, XM Satellite Radio and OnStar combined with TRANSFORMERS design cues add to the car's status as a 21st century sports car.

"Hasbro is thrilled to team up with Chevrolet and excited to see the Camaro TRANSFORMERS Special Edition come to market for our fans to enjoy," said Samantha Lomow, Global Brand Leader for TRANSFORMERS at Hasbro. "The yellow Camaro with the black stripes has become so iconic and closely associated with the BUMBLEBEE character that this edition was a natural fit for both companies."

While the aggressive styling of the Camaro is unmistakable, true TRANSFORMERS fans will notice some of the unique, but subtle features of the Camaro TRANSFORMERS Special Edition.

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro TRANSFORMERS Special Edition includes the following:

* AUTOBOT® shield on the driver and passenger side panels
* AUTOBOT® shield on each of the four wheel's center cap
* AUTOBOT® shield embroidered on interior center console
* "TRANSFORMERS" logo on driver and passenger doors' sill plates
* "TRANSFORMERS" logo embedded into the hood rally stripes
* High-gloss black center rally stripe package
* Manufacturer's suggested retail price of package: $995

Dealers are now taking orders for this car. Customers can order the TRANSFORMERS Special Edition as either a Rally Yellow LT or SS model. The optional RS appearance package can also be added.

The V6-powered Camaro uses a 3.6L engine with variable valve timing to optimize performance and fuel economy. It is SAE-certified at 304 horsepower (227 kW) and 273 lb.-ft. of torque (370 Nm). A six-speed manual transmission is standard with the 3.6L engine; a Hydra-Matic 6L50 electronically controlled six-speed automatic, with TAPshift control, is available.

The high-performance Camaro SS is equipped with a powerful 6.2L V-8, with a choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Manual transmission-equipped models receive the LS3 engine, SAE-certified at 426 horsepower (318 kW) and 420 lb.-ft. of torque (569 Nm). It is paired with a TR6060 six-speed transmission.

A new, L99 V-8 engine is used on automatic transmission-equipped SS models. It is based on the LS3, but also includes GM's fuel-saving Active Fuel Management feature. It is SAE-certified at 400 horsepower (298 kW) and 410 lb.-ft. of torque (556 Nm). It is matched with a Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed transmission that helps delivers an EPA-estimated 25 mpg on the highway.

Apart from a significant improvement in safety, also the whole look of the Camaro is enhanced, as it is lowered by up to 40 mm at the front and up to 35 mm at the back.

The advantages of the KW coilover suspension already show after the first few metres. A simple glance across the bonnet confirms how calm the front remains even when the car drives over an extremely rough ground, ensuring pleasant driving comfort.

2003 Chevrolet Avalanche-1500

2003 Chevrolet Avalanche-1500

Chevrolet has been working on improving the rest of its lineup as well. With a carbon fiber-laced, supercharged Corvette hitting the market, plans for a new compact in the works, hybridized versions of its most popular SUVs and trucks available; and the soon-to-be-released Chevrolet Volt (a car projected to be capable of traveling 40 miles on a single electric charge), Chevrolet has the product to be a dominant player in the market once again. However, with GM currently losing money and cutting brands, Chevrolet’s future is uncertain.

Interestingly, General Motors’ largest division, Chevrolet, may never have been created had GM founder William Durant not been forced out of GM. After his ouster from GM, Durant was determined to show the world that he was still a force in the industry. He teamed up with race car driver Louis Chevrolet to start the Chevrolet Motor Company of Michigan in 1911. Louis Chevrolet had worked with Durant before, driving Buick race cars when Durant was the head of Buick.

Chevrolet became so successful that by 1916, Durant’s new company had acquired 54.5 percent of General Motors. This meant Durant was once again the head of GM. In 1918, Chevrolet was folded into General Motors; since that time, the Chevrolet line has been GM’s top seller.

A continuous full line of products has helped Chevrolet maintain its sales dominance, ranging from big and comfortable vehicles like the Impala, to performance icons like the Corvette, to the utility of vehicles like the 1937 Suburban--considered by many to be the first SUV.

Another factor Chevrolet’s success has been the performance and reliability of its engines, from the inline six-cylinder introduced in 1929 and nicknamed the “Cast Iron Wonder” to the small block V-8 introduced in 1955. The small block Chevy V-8 is a design so enduring, its basic design elements are still in use today. It enjoys the distinction of having the longest production run of any mass-produced automotive engine.

Notable Chevrolet models include the 1955-57 Bel Air, a car that all but defines automotive styling of the era; the short-lived rear-engine Corvair; the Corvette, America’s most enduring sports car; and the Camaro pony car. The Camaro has such an iconic reputation that it has received more press and blogged anticipation for its return in 2010 than it did before it went on hiatus in 2002.

Chevrolet continues to be a dominant force in the GM stable, and the No. 1 reason why GM was the world’s largest car manufacturer until passed by Toyota in 2008. The success of Chevrolet pickups alone has carried the manufacturer over the years.

Like the rest of GM, Chevrolet is working to redefine itself in the context of an industry and market in transition. The 2008 Chevrolet Malibu was a car that was built to finally give Honda and Toyota a run for their money. With improvements in ride and handling, interior comfort and fit and finish, the Malibu was intended to make Chevrolet competitive once again.

Chevrolet Aveo

Chevrolet Aveo

The Chevy Aveo, which is assembled by GM Daewoo in Korea, is offered in two body styles for 2009 -- a four-door sedan and a five-door hatchback called the Aveo5.

Chevrolet Aveo

The sedan was redesigned for 2008, and this year both it and the newly restyled Aveo5 utilize a new 107-hp, 1.6L Ecotec DOHC 4-cylinder engine with variable valve timing, which can be matched to a standard 5-speed manual gearbox or optional 4-speed automatic transmission. The automatic transmission features a hold control mode to hold a higher gear and to aid traction on slippery roads. The new engine improves fuel economy to 26 mpg city and 34 mpg highway, and has been tuned for quieter performance.

Chevrolet Aveo

Both the sedan and hatchback feature theater-style rear seating, with a 60/40-split back seat that folds forward to expand the cargo area.

Chevrolet Aveo

All Aveo models have a MacPherson strut front suspension with a stabilizer bar, and a compound-link rear independent suspension with gas-charged shocks, along with variable-rate power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering. Dual-stage front airbags, and seat-mounted side air bags for front occupants are standard, and anti-lock brakes are optional across the line. A tire pressure monitoring system is also standard.

Chevrolet Aveo

Aveos are available in mid-range LS and well-equipped LT models. On LS trim, standard features include tilt steering, a rear defogger, air conditioning, and an AM/FM stereo with auxiliary input. LT models come with the most standard features including heated outside mirrors, keyless entry, cruise control, power locks, and a 6-speaker CD/MP3 sound system.

Fifteen-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels are available on all LS models and standard on the LT cars. Other noteworthy options include steering wheel audio control, a power sunroof and on the LT, perforated leatherette seats.

2009 Chevrolet Avalanche

2009 Chevrolet Avalanche

2009 Chevrolet Avalanche

2009 Chevrolet Avalanche

For 2009, Chevy's versatile Avalanche gets only modest changes, largely in the realm of exterior and interior color changes, as well as some equipment shuffling.

The 4-speed automatic and 4-speed super-duty automatic transmissions have been dropped, and a new 6-speed automatic becomes standard on all models. A heavy-duty tow package is available, as is an integrated trailer brake controller. Bluetooth connectivity is standard on all Avalanche models, and is easily activated with steering wheel controls. A new luxury package is available.

2008 Chevrolet Avalanche

2008 Chevrolet Avalanche

Model strengths:
Flexible design; distinctive looks; improved interior.

The Chevy Avalanche was completely redesigned for 2007 and therefore is carried over for the 2008 mostly unchanged. Side curtain air bags and XM satellite radio are now standard on all trim levels, and the LT and LTZ trims now have OnStar Turn-by-Turn navigation. The standard seats are slightly redesigned to include covered storage, and two Convenience Packages are newly available on LS and LT trims.

2007 Chevrolet Avalanche

2007 Chevrolet Avalanche

The Chevy Avalanche, completely redesigned for 2007, is based on GM's new, full-size SUV platform. It features more power and fuel economy, a leaner and more agile looking design, a refined interior, and more safety equipment.

All 2007 Avalanche engines offer Active Fuel Management and variable valve timing, and the ability to run on E85, a renewable fuel consisting of 15% gasoline and 85% ethanol.
2007 Chevrolet Avalanche

Inside, by lowering the instrument panel and deepening the windshield, the Avalanche's interior is roomier, airier, and more comfortable. In addition, the redesigned Avalanche has more substantial seats with easier entry.

Avalanche can be configured with a full safety system of occupant protection and crash-avoidance technology including available head curtain side air bags and standard StabiliTrak stability control system with rollover mitigation technology.

Warranty coverage is increased for 2007, with a new five-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty that's fully transferable and includes roadside assistance for the full period.

The ??? ton Avalanche and 8.1L V8 engine were discontinued for the 2007 model year.

Chevrolet Astro

tittle

General Motors introduced the Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari in 1985 in response to the wildly successful Chrysler minivans introduced two years earlier. The GM twins differed from the Chryslers by being larger and rear-wheel drive. Even though GM subsequently introduced a series of front-wheel drive minivans, the Astro and Safari survived for 20 years in the Chevy and GMC lineups, with only a few modest changes along the way.

Although many components were borrowed from other GM models, the Astro and Safari were different enough to get their own chassis designation, the M body. Unique aspects of the Astro and Safari were unit-body construction instead of the body-on-frame construction more common to pickup trucks and full-size vans. They also used a front subframe, which incorporated the engine and front suspension. Underhood wwas a 2.5-liter four-cylinder or one of two 4.3-liter V-6 engines. The V-6 engines gave the Astro a a towing capacity of up to 5,500 pounds, a significant advantage over front-wheel drive minivans.

The 1990 model year introduced several improvements to the Astro and Safari, including a new long-wheelbase version, available all-wheel drive and a new, more modern dash layout. The long-wheelbase versions of the vans were about 10 in. longer than the short versions, giving them more cargo and passenger capacity. The new dash layout was also welcome, however, the all-wheel drive system proved to be problematic. It reduced fuel economy significantly (17 mpg city versus up to 21 in rear-wheel drive versions), and the torsion bar front suspension was prone to failure. The vans received a more thorough upgrade in 1995, with a new nose and tail that brought the styling in line with the full-size Chevy Express vans, and in 1996 a new dash with an airbag-equipped steering wheel was introduced. Safety remained an issue throughout the Astro and Safari's model runs, with the vans receiving poor frontal offset barrier crash test ratings from the IIHS, and its three-star federal barrier test was below the average when the Astro went off sale in 2005, although side impact scores were significantly better.

Although largely unloved by the press, the Astro and Safari were successful in the marketplace, selling more than 3.7 million copies in the 20-year life of the vehicle. It also proved popular with the custom van industry, which turned out conversion examples of the Astro and Safari. As a somewhat ironic side note, customized Astro vans were also popular in Japan, despite the vehicle's size, thirsty engines and left-hand drive only configuration.
